Getting Started

So you’re ready to jump in with both feet? Or maybe you just want to dip your toe in the water? Well you’ve come to the right place! Here’s what you can do to get started:

1. Check out the projects we’re working on

Go to our projects page to see what we’ve got going on. This board is setup to show the current (rough) status of each of our projects and include a few more details. Click on a project number to get a description and some more information. Find a project that looks interesting that you’d like to learn more about or maybe do some work on? Great! Shoot us a message, or better yet, come on out to a hack night! (that’s step 4 🙂 )

2. Get a GitHub account

Did you check out the project board above? That’s actually built on top of GitHub (using a cool service called waffle.io). Aren’t familiar with GitHub? That’s ok! Check out this quick intro or see some ways that it’s being used by people who don’t even code. GitHub is the main tool we use at Code for NRV, and we use it in a number of different ways. So, if you don’t have an account yet, what are you waiting for? Go get signed up and take a scroll through our repositories!

3. Sign up at Meetup

While you can see the events we’re hosting, including our regular hack nights, on this website, we use Meetup.com to schedule, coordinate, and track RSVPs to our events. Meetup is a great service for finding local groups based on particular interests, so we encourage you to sign up, join our group, and then see what other groups are around the NRV you might be interested in joining!

4. Come to a hack night!

We are currently hosting Hack Nights every other Thursday at TechPad in downtown Blacksburg. As mentioned above, we use Meetup to schedule our events and keep track of RSVP’s, which helps us provide enough pizza and drinks for everyone to enjoy. These are low key, informal events, so feel free to drop in whenever, even if you haven’t RSVP’d or done any of the steps above! 🙂
